IBM Rational Tool Optimization, Support, and Requirements Engineering Assessment

5/4/2009

For this government contractor, Noblestar provided various consulting services to improve their capabilities in the software lifecycle, and maximize their investment in IBM Rational tools and other complimentary tools.  This contractor contacted Noblestar when they experienced a catastrophic failure in their Rational repository - a large, geographically dispersed team could no longer access software components and artifacts.  Noblestar provided support within 24 hours and was able to reestablish the environment over a weekend.  During this time, there were daily calls between the contractor's CIO and CEO.  Needless to say there was tremendous pressure on Noblestar’s primary contact, the CIO.  The Noblestar management team, Noblestar's expert consultant, and the contractor's team stayed abreast to the status of all tasks and activities throughout the process.

Once the immediate situation was settled, Noblestar provided an assessment of the tooling infrastructure and the business processes that supported their environment.  In this assessment, a roadmap was created that included implementation of a formal disaster recovery plan and a reconfigured environment that is more reliable for a dispersed team.  Throughout this engagement, various Rational tasks were completed, such as upgrades and refinements of the IBM Rational environment.

Noblestar also provided support for the contractor's product development team.  This team's primary responsibility was to elicit, define, and manage requirements for their entire product line. As the contractor acquired new contracts, the base product line was configured and customized to meet the new needs for their new client.  The contractor captured requirements in a large, monolithic IBM Rational Requisite Pro database which created inefficiencies and significant performance problems.  Noblestar provided a requirements practice assessment and helped the contractor develop a requirements framework.  This framework included the development of managed business process as well as a restructured Rational Requisite Pro database configuration.

Business Value:

- Reliable IBM Rational framework that supports a large, geographically distributed development team

- An improved requirements engineering framework to better support the contractor's product line, including: improved management of requirement change, better integration with testing, and a technically more responsive Rational Requisite Pro.
